Browsers War - a memory story

by Jose E.

Well as we spend most of our time in the browsers, that´s why I made a little test to see how much memory are burning the browsers out there.

Selecting the major 4 browsers and making this: first open the browser with “about:blank” and see how much memory (in MB) is consumed, after that we have navigated to the same page in every browser, this pages are google.com (very simple), nytimes.com (heavy) youtube.com (video), 2advanced.com (extreme flash) and flauntr.com (made with flex).

values in MB

Finally

Firefox is old-known by the memory leaks, but as you see Safari is not far away, the lightweight here is Opera (as expected) and IE 7 is not that bad. Also I learn that Flex Apps are very heavy. And Google main page consume between 2 and 8 MB in your RAM.

Keep flowing.

Well, I guess the good thing is that we measure it in MEGABYTES, not GIGABYTES (yet).
I know just ten years ago I was trying to conserve KILOBYTES in my programming on 640K machines.
