Some toughts on the Android GUI
When I readed that the GUI of Android will be “It’s an amazing UI — it’s interface is top-notch…”, my expectations started to rise… a week later… the face of Android appear… please Rubin, tell me what part of top-noch is present in this image, me please.
When Apple come out with the iPhone back in January they have already made a beautiful, usable and revolutionary GUI for the new device. What´s make the iPhone so great the GUI, nothing more.
But… is Google, with a history of only 3 successful UI/UX in an average of… 20+ services, Google Mail, Google Reader and Google Calendar, that´s all. Why is not Google hiring some good UI/UX designer once for all, they have TAT in the OHA, they are great at this. Really I don´t understand.
They knew, they have seen the iPhone GUI and others GUI on mobile phones out there, why they come with something like this. That is represented on GOOG values, the people where waiting something else, something new, now there are disappointed.
We must learn that people like beautiful things, people work better good usability and don´t get frustrated so easily when they can make simple task without read the half of the user manual.
Fortunately this is only a preview of Android and the SDK, and I hope they improve the UI/UX/Interaction in the future.
Finally
The GUI of Android… simply… sucks. Apple have nothing to fear with Android, cause the first devices designed for Android will appear on the first half of the next year.

Theres a good article here, from the future of mobile conference in London, UK last week.

I agree. But dude, its in beta. They may improve it. Hope for the best. Android is much more powerful than iPhone’s OSX though.
It’s hard to sometimes not see the potential of new things, especially when you’re up another manufacturer’s ass.
The wonderful idea of having an almost completely customizable and open ended development tool for a mobile piece of technology is being overlooked here.
If Google wanted to put out another iPhone then we wouldn’t even be commenting here.
This has been developed so you can control your environment the way you want, not the way the cool-monger Apple wants you to. I’m thinking the interface is up to you. How perfect or non-perfect it is is directly related to how much time you put into it. Obviously this isn’t for everyone.
googles idea is great. and you’re rite: that GUI is a piece of s***.
So, lemme think…Google and GUI…when was the last time they made a good one?!
Ah, remember:the search engine.
Their only yet good GUI. Adwords,Analytics,Maps…geez, all their other projects are kick in the nuts.
So making this million-$ competion for “designing stuff for android” makes sense… saves google money and will be better than anything the google guys might be able to do.
I would hold off judgement. For one, this “OS” is most likely going to be heavily customised by the different cellphone makers. After all, it’s not for a Google Phone, and it would be unlikely that the cellphone companies would want the OS on their mobile phone to look the same as the same OS on others’ mobile phones. Secondly, like you said, this is a preview. How do you think the iPhone GUI looked at this fase in development? Difference is, we won’t be able to know. And that difference is exactly why this phone is important.

to make things even stupider, the Google navigation menu (in that photo) resembles the old-school Apple Mac dock. Does Google think this is creative? NOT!
